I guess it would be pretty accurate to say I am a complete total raving birth junkie! I am on a mission, a birthing mission, I have spent over 20 years supporting couples during that amazing, scary, overwhelming, empowering journey to parenthood! Most of us are programmed through life to believe we can’t do this, we can’t birth our babies, we will need medical support to do it for us! Positive Birth Preparation and techniques learnt in Hypnobirthing are here to challenge this misconception..
Ok so lets put it out there right now! You are growing a human! This is a big deal …. Your body is doing the most amazing thing and TRUST ME it knows how to birth your human. Why would our body grow a baby and then not know when or how to birth that baby? That would be crazy! So what is it that stops so many woman from doing this, from birthing their way?
So that’s where I come in 🙂 I can support you in your journey to truly believing that you are an awesome birthing woman, capable, totally capable of rocking this. I don’t preach about the perfect birth, for me it’s about a positive birth, so that during birth you are confident, in control and calm. Birthing your baby in this way will mean when you look back at your birth you feel good about it, you feel good about you and the support you received. A good birth experience is so important in starting that journey into parenthood in the best state physically and emotionally. You can do this, you can smash it, birth is yours!
I qualified in Midwifery from Liverpool John Moore’s University in 1997. I had dreamed of being a Midwife since being a little girl so this was a dream come true. Working at the Royal Berkshire NHS Trust in Reading as a full time Midwife for 5 years, I then diversified and trained as a Sexual Health Adviser. I worked as a Sexual Health Adviser for 7 years before taking up a role as a Public Health Manager in the NHS specialising in young people and sexual health. I have now worked for the NHS for over 21 years!
In previous years I kept up my Midwifery skills through occasional Bank work. In 2009 myself and my husband Paul fell pregnant with our first child together, Paul already had two daughters Leah now 22yrs and Carys 19yrs old. Even as a midwife and ‘google happy’ pregnant mum to be I had never heard of Hypnobirthing!
Towards the end of my pregnancy a friend loaned me a couple of CDs for relaxation. As soon as I started my maternity leave I would lie down at least twice a day and listen to the CDs, I would usually fall to sleep whilst listening to it, therefore thinking I couldn’t have taken in the positive statements and relaxations on the CD.
We planned a home birth with a birthing pool planned as my intention had always been for as natural a birth as possible to benefit both the baby and me. Our baby was due in November and only 4 days after the due date I gave birth to our son Charlie using only the pool for pain relief and the occasional puff of gas and air, Charlie was born in the local hospital, though I laboured for the most part at home.
In all honesty it was the most empowering, wonderful and intuitive experience of my life, I felt completely in control at all times and was overjoyed to see the relaxed and supportive look on Paul’s face as we welcomed our son into the world.
To this day we often talk about the experience we had and without doubt I know that the relaxations and positive affirmations along with a fantastically supportive husband were the basis for such an amazing birthing experience. Charlie was a very laid back baby from the outset and the months that followed only emphasised this. Breastfeeding established with ease and the relationship that developed for myself and Paul with Charlie is one that I know we owe to our calm, comfortable and empowering birth experience.
My own experience with childbirth undoubtably reignited my passion for caring for women, partners, families and babies during this life changing experience. It has been the birth of Charlie and the previous work as a Midwife that fuelled my desire to become involved in Hypnobirthing.
In 2011 I took the long desired step to become a fully qualified Hypnobirthing teacher. I now teach my very own programme ‘The Little Birth Company’ this offers Hypnobirthing and complete Antenatal preparation and is awesomely tailored to couples today, with a wonderful programme that is both easy to follow, simple and effective.
“I totally believe that Hypnobirthing can offer a women the opportunity to return to truly primitive birthing, to reject the ‘modern’ fears of childbirth and to connect with her body and believe in its innate ability to birth her baby. It also recognises the vital role that the birthing partner plays in the birthing process in promoting relaxation and maintaining a comfortable, relaxed and safe environment.”
Wendy completed the Nuturing Birth Doula training in 2012 and also works as a Birth Doula.
I gave birth to our second son Alfie in March 2013 in a wonderful home water hypnobirth.
